6 Rain

Rain

Rain brings out the moody in people.  Literature is full of rain especially in gothic novels.  This exercise attempts to view rain as something positive, something to look forward to.  Even though the examples are positive, it is a struggle to get your students to follow suit.  But if they find that kernal of goodness in the rain, it is a marvelous thing.

Here are some poems about the rain:

It feels good to make love when it rains.

                                                  Sam Rainey

I love rain

Sometimes the rain reminds me of hail

I’m seeing hail the size of raindrops

And bird eggs.

The rain is like cut glass in the sun.

I love the rain because I love diamonds.

                                                  Leroy Burton

Western Rain

When I lived on the west coast

It rained for three solid months

All the way from Vancouver

Down to San Francisco.

In England it rains nearly all of the time,

And in Niagara Falls the mist is like the rain.

I don’t like rain all the time,

But it’s necessary, like war,

Like cannons when they rain.

                                                   Eric Carlson
