3 Food

In the children’s story Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, there is a town called Chewandswallow where it rains milk or juice, where there can be storms of meatballs or tomato tornadoes.

Ask the group to jot down their favorite foods/drinks for the following:

A favorite drink:

Something alive you hollow out (like a pumpkin):

A food that looks like a tree:

A food that looks like hail or hail stones:

A food that looks like snow:

A fruit in the shape of an egg:

A food that is tall and skinny:

Something else alive you hollow out:

Now, go around the table and ask each of them to read you their answers.  If you have more than 8 people, keep going around until everyone gets to contribute on of the words.  Put the first person’s word in the first blank and the second in the second etc.  When finished you can read them all the story or stories they helped create.

I stepped outside and opened my umbrella because it was raining

________ and my ______ boots were getting wet.  I walked through a forest of _______, and it started to hail _______

and then snow ____________.  _______ cones rolled across a swaying lawn of _______ rippling in the wind.  And I collected all

the food in a _______and went back inside to have my dinner.

Here is the original poem:

Plum

I am eating a plum

this lusciousSanta Rosa, fat ruby orb.

Biting, taste long-lost summers,

am a child again

at the fruit stall

by the dusty road to the sea.

Happy girl with strange dreams,

sticky brown hands on a red-stained paper bag.

My parents were alive and summer was forever.

Mouthful of hot sweet memories,

tasting blood sap and remembering.

Here and now

weary years later

I am standing in a kitchen

twelve thousand miles away

fruit in a bowl, clouds in the sky,

saying yes to a plum.

Now ask the group if anyone wants to share the poems they’ve just written.
